Les Tourelles de Longueville 2016, Pichon Baron, Pauillac, Bordeaux, France

57,50

2016 is a great vintage in Pauillac and this wine is no exception!
Les Tourelles de Longueville is is the second wine from the famed Chateau Pichon Baron, 2nd Grand Cru Classé en 1855. While it is not meant to replicate the style of the Grand Vin, there are obviously similarities and shared vineyards (the 5% of Petit Verdit in the Tourelles will, according to Pichon Baron management, end up in the Grand Vin when a little bit more mature).
It has an intense, deep ruby red colour. The nose offers notes of fresh red fruit and the palate is fresh with the flavours building to a lovely finish.  Drinking now til 2035.

Wine Advocate scores Les Tourelles 2016 with 90-92 points and says
The 2016 Les Tourelles de Longueville is a blend of 58% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot matured in 30% new oak for 12 months. It offers a mixture of red and black fruit on the nose, just a touch of melted tar with fine delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with quite a powerful opening, dense black fruit tinged with graphite, a solid Deuxième Vin with a slightly aloof finish (at least at the moment). There is a pleasant graphite note lingering long on the aftertaste that completes a fine Pauillac to enjoy over the next 12-15 years (from 2017).

Chateau Pichon Baron say this about their fabulous 2nd Wine
Tourelles de Longueville 2016 has an intense, deep ruby red colour. The nose offers notes of fresh red fruit such as redcurrant and raspberry. The palate gives an impression of freshness, wild flowers and
morning dew. The attack is well defined and builds to a crescendo. The structure
is taut. The finish is drawn out and sappy. This Tourelles de Longueville is
fresh, well integrated, accessible and full of charm.
Most of the fruit comes from a plot, mostly planted with Merlot, called Sainte Anne, giving it a distinct personality within the Chateau.

A great opportunity to drink premium Pauillac at a sensible price.
